Cauliflower babies already getting attacked
« on: June 23, 2007, 11:38 »
My cauliflower plants are alll of 4-5cms and went out this morning and found some had been munched!     Picked up the planter they were in and low and behold a small slug underneath!

Even though some leaves have been eaten will they still continue to grow or will the massacre devestate them?

Didn't think slugs liked baby leaves but I guess I was wrong!

They'll survive provided the central growing tip hasn't been munched

Pigeons are brassica eaters too, maybe protect them with some wire or similar.

On my Lottie, Pigeons are by far the biggest culprit as regards brassica eating. Any plant left un-netted will not be there the next day.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

We may be paranoid, but the pigeons watch us planting out - we just know they are planning when to swoop, so always net the brassicas. My son is begging us to let him come and shoot some, may smuggle him in one evening.

No you're not paranoid. The b*ggers do that. When your son's finished there.........................
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi, you need to do what I do. Put your plants in and then put smashed up egg shells all around them. Then always put netting over them. I never have mine eaten away.
Hi all, I hope you have bean working hard on your plot the way I do.

Time is natures way of stopping everything happening at once

Depends of whether they've pecked away the growing tips or not. There's only one way to find out!

I have to net just about everything now, the damn things are eating a wider selection every year.
