Title: Rhubarb, to pull or not to pull
Post by: donald.cape on June 23, 2007, 13:41
I've grown rhubarb for the first time this season from some crowns someone gave me. They told me not to pull any stalks the first year to let it get established. What do I do with the stalks that have grown, they seem much better than some peoples that has been growing for years. Do I just leave them to die off or should I pull some and use it anyway.

Just leave them for this year, plenty of manure in the winter.

I was in the same boat last year, I just left it alone, the stalks will just die off. But I don’t suppose trying a stalk will do any harm.
Title: You should really leave them ....

... because the leaves provide the nourishment to feed the crown and produce a good crop next year.

Tempting though it is rhubarb is for life, so waiting one year in the bigger scheme of things isn't really an issue.
