you can get food in a mash form (like crumbs). i wasnt too keen on it, or my chickens as i found it too fine and most of it blew away but you can add warm water and feed it as a mash (as you can also do with pellets)

I was given some layers mash from a local poultry farm and my hens loved it.  They ate every last scrap with no waste.  It might be that it was a special mix but I know my girls will be waiting for some next time they are changing over to growers mash.

It was the first time i'd had it (my dad picked up the wrong sack) and i wondered if it was a dodgy sack because it was so fine and powdery and the chickens had trouble eating it. It didnt last as long like i said most of it blew away lol. Should have just made it into porridge for them

What do you mean they are very strong?

Are you talking about chicken pellets for feeding to chickens, or chicken manure pellets for your garden?

Tad confused here!!!   ???

The OP was unclear, I have to say and I assumed it was referring to chicken feed pellets and moved it here from Welcome. After I logged out last night, I too had second thoughts.

Lets give this question a try in GYO. :D

Not sure why you think chicken pellets are very strong, unless you mean the smell.
N.P.K. for Chicken Pellets is 4  2.5  2.5
BFB is 6 6 6 and Growmore is 7 7 7

I'm no help at all I'm afraid as I've never used manure pellets, just straight manure! ;)

They'll only be too strong if you apply them at more than the recommended rate.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

A confusing question... I have used a handful of pellets and a handful of general fert per square yard or so for years and never found it too strong. you need to put it in a couple of weeks before planting.  It would only be too strong if you put too much on..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Thank you very much for all your replies. I should have included the fact that I was considering them as a manure and not for feeding the hens! No doubt they would have taken a dim view of it all if I had tried!!

Because of the constant rain, a lot of the nitrates and goodness has been washed out of the soil and want something to build the goodness back up again. A lot of my cabbages are going yellow as are my runner bean leaves say nothing of my peas which are only about two and a half inches long plus my carrots and poarsnips! I heard on a BBC garden programme someone say that chicken pellets were rather strong and they used an alternative but I can't remember the name of it. Never mind, I will get a tub of Chicken pellets this week-end and spread them sparingly over the plots.

Thanks again,

RonBin

I'm new to allotments and I read on the growing help pages that Bunny poo is high in nitrates - more so than chicken pellets so i've doused some of my veg and especially my sweetcorn as it started all yellow - it's now looking really good and green. I advertised on freecycle for bunny poo and I get a monthly few bags from a local lady.. seems to be good at this stage.
