Strawberrys - let's get some pics up!
« on: June 23, 2012, 21:00 »
Hey all, got my first strawberrys which were big and tasty, I can only say fantastic!!

Sadly there were only 11 and didn't last long with the kids.

But got me thinking, what are your crops like, how much have you got so far, post some pics if you can.
New grower here - handle with care!!

I bought 10 plants last Feb and I got nearly 100 plants this year, when they start green fruits, I have to pull up nearly half of the plants as I planted them too close and the green berries could not turn into red because there is no light and dump under leaves.

I have got lots of berries since the thining.

and today I have to cut off almost a hundred runners to stop them taking all the energy of growing and resulting smaller berries.
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

First bowl yesterday, lots more fruit so I am going to take up some more jam jars to cover them and keep them off the ground.  Also just remembered that I need to take up some slug pellets

I've got some coming, but they are not red yet!  I've one got 12 plants so I don't think I'll be getting too much fruit this year... I'm hoping to get a couple of runners though to increase my plant population (perhaps I'm hoping for too much as I only got these plants this year!)

oooh pics of the picked strawberries look yummy!

Willow, they say you shouldn't keep the runners from first year plants, so I have been taking mine off this year.  I will do it next year though, but not sure how I'm going to layer my runners when my plants are in their tower!

First harvest of the year, not a great pic as it was only the corner of another photo I took of my days harvest on Saturday, but I think you get the idea of how good they were.

Read about my allotment exploits at Ecodolly at plots 37 & 39.  Questions, queries and comments are appreciated at Comment on Ecodolly's exploits on plots 37 & 39
