Hi ,

As I mentioned in a previous thread I was going to go to Homebase today to buy some fruit bushes. Well I came home with Raspberries,Gooseberry,Blackcurrant and Bluberry bushes.

And ... I have several questions...

Are they fine in frosts or is it worth taking them in to the cold greenhouse ?

Will I get fruit off any of them this summer ?

It says they fruit June - September but when!

I will plant them in Feb/March on the new plot so what should the spacing be ? I am going to plant  the homebase ones along with lidl ones !

Thanks

All plants are frost hardy but if they're not planted it wouldn't hurt to put them in a cold greenhouse to protect the roots.

Raspberry yield - depends on the type. If fall fruiting then you'll get harves this year. If summer fruiting, you might have to wait a year or 2, even up to 5 depending on the variety.
Blueberries - unless its a big plant, you'll have to wait a few years. You'll get a few berries off a young plant but the real harvest comes with established plants.
Gooseberries - you'll likely get berries this year but the main crop would come next year.
Blackcurrant fruits come on 2nd year canes (woody ones).

As mentioned, its only some older varieties that might take 5 years to fruit. Developers are constantly improving varieties to fruit earlier so you'd need to research what you have and what the predicted maturing time for it is. I have one old favourite that's a definite 5 yr one. I recently bought a new hybrid that fruited like crazy the 2nd year with a few berries the first year.....but it 'burned out' quickly. So you takes your chances.

I put them in as soon as possible, maybe wait a couple of weeks for the current cold snap to pass.

Should fruit in the second year and get better from that, I think.

Blue berries are supposed to like acidic soil, so I use pelleted chicken poo instead of the pelleted NPK on them.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended
