They have tiny little flower buds which are just not developing. I wouldn’t normally feed until the courgettes appear.

Previous years I have followed the advice of a seasoned gardener and haven’t watered before the flowers appeared unless the plants looked stressed ; I have always had good crops but also mildew.

I have watered far more than normal after reading this thread and wondered whether my plants are just too happy.

If you have watered more than normal maybe some of the nutrients have been washed away - I would suggest that you start feeding now.

I always get mildew and am trying a wee experiment this year. I had some of those growbag plant halos doing nothing in the garage. I have put them on top of my individual pots and planted the courgette plants in them. I am hoping that this means I can easily keep the roots well watered without splashing the leaves. There also should be heap loads more air circulation.

Mildew has eventually arrived but not in any force and the plants are otherwise healthy. Should I count this as a success? Maybe mildew hasn’t been a problem this year?

From a practical point though it has made watering a lot easier so I am definitely going to do the same next year.

Here, mildew seems to be more prevalent on courgettes and pumpkins. My butternut squashes, patty pans and 'Lunga di Napoli don't seem to be affected.

Yes, it's easy to see that some varieties are more resistant than others  ;) Perhaps we should note which is which - so we all know which ones to grow again, and which not to bother with.

Pumpkin rocket was the first to get it here, and is now completely dead, with only one football sized fruit on each  :(
Tromba d'Albegna - no sign of any mildew yet,
Harrier, small fruited butternut, just a little mildew,
Thelma Sanders just a little,
Celebration, just a little,
Blue Ballet, quite a bit but new growth green,

Courgette, Cavili - some mildew but no new fruits  :(
