I'm just cooking the last one from last year. Are they self fertile and can I use the seeds for this years plants, or will they have been doing the hanky-panky with next doors pumpkins?

I did this last year and it worked out ok in the end, but this type of plant will cross pollnate easily. Also squash suck the goodness out of the ground. They need loads of feed, space and water.

I planted ten seeds from a shop bought butternut a few weeks ago and now have ten healthy seedlings.  Kept them in the greenhouse, maybe the hot weather helped.

Vaguely remember wellies? posting a similar post and I think some one had said that they don't save well. I know they need lots of visits from bee's to pollinate properly perhaps that's something to do with it.

Anything in the squash and pumpkin family is very promiscuous (if that's how u spell it), so if there was a mixture of different plants within proximity then it's likely you'll have ended up with Heinz57-type seeds ...
