Vinegar
« on: April 24, 2007, 22:59 »
Hello all, I'm new to this site

I like pickled onions, I buy alot of them. Is there any reason I shouldn't use the vinegar again to pickle things...?

Also what's the best way of thickening pickle so that it's nice and spreadable... I'm thinking apples?
If you really mean it, it all comes round again

Personally, I would not re-use vinegar for the simple reason that it has been diluted by the water content of whatever you pickled first time around.

Use it on your chips or to acidify water for your blueberry bushes.

The vinegar i use on onions is fine used again.saying that they get re-used pretty quick and never pickle anything but the onions in it.I also use mine on chips after and indeed it is extreamly nice.

Two main types :

1. malt vinegar : from malted barley, brewed and then left exposed to air (oxygen being the important bit)

2. non-brewed condiment : basically diluted acetic acid from a chemical works

Also cider vinegar, wine vinegar & others from their respective alcoholic sources.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinegar
