Title: Great portable stove for the allotment
Post by: mushroom on November 05, 2007, 17:56
it has only one ring, but the heat from it is great. very quick to boil a kettle. That's a 2 litre kettle in the photos:

The stove itself was only about 14 quid, I got four butane fills for another 2 quid (at discount). One butane fill is enough to do 2 main meals n the frying pan, with some left over to make several cups of tea  8)

Tomorrow morning, I'll be taking down some onion soup to have on the plot.  8)

Forget the stove....I'm more impressed that you are a fellow double-bagger when it comes to tea.

We've got one like that too - does yours come with a handy carry box?

:D   wow i thought that was just me who did that.

At home, I have a cup that holds just over a pint. 3 bags go in there, steeped for 3 mins or so. My tea looks reddish rather than brown when milk is added (just a drop, mmm ta).

Do you run your water through a filter before boiling, to remove hardness?

It did but I found the carry box very flimsy, it broke after being opened twice. It's still a good deal though  8) I was amazed how fast it was - according to the instructions, heat output is rated at 2.4Kw.

I'm making a bench area in the shed where it will be a permanent fixture.

Had filtered water at our old house.  Try Yorkshire Tea - a good strong cuppa.

I've been using my one of those stoves for a few weeks now and they are marvellous!!  :D

It's really nice to take some soup and milk down (coffee, sugar and teabags are already there) and spend the whole day in the lottie (with rather more frequent breaks than I was taking before I brought the stove down!)

They warm through the shed nicely too!

oooh - i picked up one of those from a freecycle clearance - didn't know if they were any good - might have to get a new gas cartridge and give it go - but not down the lottie (no sheds allowed - so flask and beers for me down there)

might be alright when up the woods though - might be nice to cook up a meal up there - as we normally just reheat things ontop of the woodburner)

thanks for the tip

I am on my third one. 1st one was stolen along with the teabags and sugar.Second one got run over when I was using it at work. this one is kept in its case and in the boot of my car untill needed and then put back.  But I only pay £10.00 from my local market,so they're not too dear. they are great for tea or to heat up soup when it gets a bit chilly.

I saw this cooking tripod at Woodfest in St Asaph. I've currently got a mate making me one. I reckon its going to be great for a bit of outdoor cooking and hand warming. :D

well, the wd-40 isn't 'kept' there - but fair comment it shouldn't have been there when I was using it. Saying that, though - it discharged almost no heat at the sides. According to the instructions, it should be at least 20cm from the wall, but again, saying that, the side of the shed didn't get warm at all.

I've got one like that in my lottie shed too, carry box an all.  First thing I do when I get to the lottie is put the kettle on.

hah, I thought it was just me who did that - but then again, I cycle to the lottie. After loading and attaching the trailer to the bike, then riding it there, I've worked up quite a sweat. That's my excuse 8)

My carry-box thing broke. No worries though, the lottie is what it's for and where it'll stay.

Actually, it's not so silly after all. Do you see the bit in the picture, where the dial is? Well, that dial is the control/regulator, and behind it, within the unit, is a can full of butane, which supplies fuel to the burner. So, no worries  :D

there are some purpose built units on site (but i don't have a key - 1 per full plot only -  but i have a half plot and let the old guy who gave up his half plot to keep use of the shed as his need is great than mine

i just drive my car to my plot - and keep tools in car - and a few odd bits i keep in an old coal bunker - the big things just get left out

I find that I have to fiddle with mine a lot at first to get the cannister to sit properly without squirting butane out when I take it out of its box.  Bit annoying because sometimes it needs an extra wedge of cardboard and other times it doesn't.

it has a slot in the reciever valve that fits the cannister you need to make sure this is in the right place soozi or it will leak  :( and be dangerous

That means you aren't fitting it right. It should just drop in after slot alignment, without any effort whatsoever, and with no spillage or leakage.
Mine has a lever on the front, which must be set to 'unlock' before adding or removing the cannister. Then you line up the slots. On removal, it should just lift out.

You're either not doing it right or you have a defective unit.
