Aquadulce broad bean
« on: April 22, 2012, 14:02 »
My broad bean was planted last November and is about 3 to 4 feet high and full of flowers and bees and butterflies, it had been like this for almost three weeks but no bean pods come up at all! Anyone has the same problem? Or is it just normal? Or it's too cold? Thanks
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

It's probably not moving due to the cold weather as you say, but given that you got bees, the flowers should eventually give way to beans.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just went to plant out 20 kohl rabi plants, and checked very closely the broad beans. And found one broad bean pod which is about a third of my first pea pod in size.

Now I have one each.

I am now thinking if it is time to pinch off the top of the plants to allow the pod grow? or should I wait a bit longer?

the instruction on the seed package says I need to pinch when the first pod shows.

but it IS tiny at the moment.

My November plants were all eaten by slugs. I will be planting out new seedlings this week.

As fars as I know pinching out the top few leaves is to discourage blackfly taking a liking to the tender tips......

.....at this time of year blackfly are rare (too chilly so far) but keep an eye on the plants and be ready to nip them out.

Sounds as if you have the promise of a good early crop - patience.  ;)

You are lucky Bing, I put in two rows of Aquadulce in November, only four germinated and these motley few are only 6" tall and the leaves have been attacked by something that nibbles around the edge!!

sorry to know that. I can see my leavies are nibbled and there are little holes on them, but they still very bushy.

I guess I just need to be patient and wait for the pods and the blackfly, ants and ladybirds (these are what I found out with my last year's experience growing a different veriaty of BB whci I planted in Feb, I had a good crop, but even used Curry paste to fence off the ants during that very dry April)

Pea and bean weevils. It is not uncommon for people to believe that broad beans actually grow this way!
