personally i grow them in a bed. They are quite thirsty and can dry out quickly in pots. Dont forget how much they sprawl out a lot :)

I'd probably put one at each end of the bed, and use small sticks in the ground to force the growing points to go in opposite directions and then round the outside of the beds.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My Uchiki Kuri squash have now grown the length of a 7 foot bed, then when I wasn't looking they've scaled the chain link fence at the end, gone all the way up that and along the top :) I swear they grow several inches a day.

Mine are in (6 plants).  By the pumpkins - lots of space given. Only question I have is, do I treat like pumpkins and only let one squash grow on each plant clipping the others or just leave to grow and produce many squash(es) like corgettes etc?

I leave them to grow, and only stop them if they run out of room. You need a btter return than on per plant for the space they take up!

"Lots of space" is very subjective.

My 5 plants last year took up 40 m2.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

1200mmx1200mm each plant.
Dig hole about 450mmx450mm and fill with compost, soil back on top to form a  mound.
Plant on top of mound with a plastic bottle inserted alongside so that water can go straight down to the roots.
Feed once a week via bottle.

Get them out asap. My experience of butternut is that you can easily  run out of time before you get a decent crop from them. I hope you are not too late planting them out. If you already have the ground ready then go for it.

They are very heavy feeders and will need lots of fertilizer!  I have three tiny little plants right now but already they have buds on them!  Never grew them before, but they must be a lot like pumpkins as they both are in the same squash family.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
