Hi Folks,  after a long way back from losing my chooks and making changes to the setup I am nearing being ready for more chickens. We want them for laying and I recognise that now we are approaching autumn then winter and so the laying rate will drop/stop. But does it matter in the long-term if we get them now. My understanding is that chickens have a finite amount of cycles and so the delay through winter would merely mean that they lay for a longer period?

we are due to get ours 3 weeks today, have been assured this is ok, would have prefered to get them earlier in the year but garden has not been ready until now.

From my own experience my points of lay have laid right through their first winter so you may be lucky.  But you are right in that they do have a certain number of eggs to lay in a life time so will lay a few months longer... 

I'd get them if I was you!

On a commercial free range set up you  this would be a good time to get new p.o.l.as you are fairly sure they will lay throughout they're first winter,spring summer etc then get rid and replace this time next year(you don't have to ,either provide a bit of light to extend the day length,or except they won't lay next winter)  in short...do it!  TD

Thanks folks for all you replies, i'll go for it then. I'm just rebuilding the shed and laying foundations and away we go then!
