Title: Is it too late in the year for hatching?
Post by: Daucus on September 26, 2009, 13:21
Our lovely broody hen is at it again, but I'm wondering if it's a bit late in the year for her to hatch some more chicks. We're all set up with broody coops and plenty of space, and she's a proven good mother, but the cold weather is about to set in. I'd be grateful to hear your opinions.

It is a tricky one ???

If you have a broody the chicks should be ok if she doesn't have too many :)
If you have the room and the facilities to keep them warm through out winter is she rejects them for any reason then I can't see why not :)

At the end of the day it's up to you and the amount of work your prepared to put in if things don't work out :)

Saying that she may not sit full term either, gamble all round really :)

Sarah :)

Thanks Sarah - good point about a smaller number of chicks, hadn't thought about that.
We can step in if needs be, it wouldn't be the first time we've had a chicken or 12 living in the kitchen!
