Eggs
« on: January 13, 2012, 10:57 »
Hi. I am new here, just got our first blue rangers yesterday. I was just wondering. I was cleaning out the nest box this morning and found a very soft small egg. Like an egg with no shell if that makes sense? They are 20 weeks old. Is that normal?

perfectly normal, at their age they are just coming into lay and so their system isn't quite in sync yet. They will get there, by the way if the egg is still intact you can still eat it (obviously don't try to boil it :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

because of the changes she may have just rushed this one and you may have to wait a day or two for another but at least you know one of them is about ready  :).
Please don't forget to post a photo of them on the chicken chat pages - we love looking at other peoples hens  :D

When i worked on farm we used to get a few shell-less eggs, was so funny...
but a joyful states is normal with an hen coming into lay but dont forget a bird needs grit or similar for egg formation, A young bird wont need a lot and would probably get what she needs from feed & scratting about so just make sure they can.

grit is kept in their crop to help grind their feed and not for egg formation, I think you mean crushed oyster shell which is for the calcium  :)

Yeh when we got then hens we also bought  starter pack. Includes, bedding, layers pellets, grit with shell, mixed corn, red mite powder, apple cider, feeder and drinker. Think that's all they need? Oh and they are vaccinated.
