chilly peppers
« on: July 24, 2006, 21:19 »
Hello every one.
I have had an allotment for about 4 years but still new to it.
I have a question, I have grown some chilly's and some peppers but have mixed the plants up.
Do, one grow upwords and one downwards?

Reg from Bas.
I forgot to ask as well, can you water the allotment plants in mid day, as sometimes I am working first thing in morning, and late in evening.
I only have to do this one day a week.
I'm lost without my SatNav.

I do but never with the sprinkly thing on. Don't get water on the leaves in mid day sun. It takes longer because you have to be careful.

Can't help with the chilli/pepper thing. sorry.
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

they normally all grow downwards in my experience though i guess some chilli peppers grow pointing up if they're the more tiny and ornamental types. What varieties did you plant?
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

Up or down!

We've got peppers growing in both directions!
The Hungarian Hot Wax are pointing upwards, The Gypsy orange and the Tasty Red Grill are pointing downwards.

Have no idea what this means! How hot are the hot way? The only Hungarian yellow peppers she has eaten were quite big and were 'warm' not what could be called hot. The 'others' are sweet peppers.

So, the best thing to do would be to wait and see! A nice surprise when they ripen! (She mixes up labels all the time!) She even watered some pepper seeds for several weeks and nothing came up at all - I think she forgot to sow the seeds ...
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

Well, all you have to do is try one pepper from each plant and stick a label next to the plant either saying Hot or Sweet :)

Watch that first bite if you're trying that method.    As far as how HOT peppers are  :tongue2: here is a Web site that has a Scoville Heat rating for most varieties peppers http://www.peppergal.com/#.  Lots of great peppers available from them too.

I have a small chilli plant in the centre of the greenhouse.  According to the packet it produces small medium hot chilli's.  They looked so tasty the other evening that I decided to pick one and eat it was I watered.  Anyone out there who is tempted to do this don't - I very nearly drank a whole watering can full of water to calm my mouth down.
Did not enjoy the experience of eating them raw, but I can't wait to cook with them!
Enjoying the traditional ways and values of life.

Serious word of warning - if you cut / deseed  chili peppers. wash your hands immediately after and do not touch your eyes until you have washed them. Gentlemen only - wash your hands BEFORE you go to the loo.
If you ignore the above, you will only do it once. Bit like sticking your hand into the fire, you don't do it twice.

Chilli peppers - hot or wot?
Heather_S suggests tasting a pepper to see if it is hot, or not, and put a label to say which.  I was just wondering if you can tell (by tasting) before the pepper is ripe (? has changed colour).
(Don't try the seeds because they can be FIREY hot and she doesn't fancy milk). Oliver

PS: Don't think you can go by size or shape to say what is hot or not.

In her experience the small chilli peppers are often very hot and the bigger ones, which we call peppers, are actually Capsicums aka 'sweet peppers' are usually sweet. For example, the Hungarian Yellow Wax peppers they had last year (very pale waxy greenish yellow, about 6 in long, pointed, brought back from Hungary) were big, but the flesh was quite warm.

The Scotch Bonnet, on the other hand, is small and perfectly formed but VERY HOT!

Oliver -yes generally hot peppers are hot before being ripe. Green peppers(sweet peppers) are just that... green pepper that haven't ripened yet. This is why they're usually a little cheaper. Less time waiting around for the fruit to ripen. I normally eat my jalapenos when they're green rather than red. If your human doesn't like milk, she can try eating a slice of bread or cheese instead to help wash away any heat from the chili pepper.

I'm afraid I do - it was a few years ago now but never to be forgotten.  Starts as an itch, so of course one discreetly scratches and then the burning starts.
