Title: Last year's missed potatoes
Post by: BARNACLE BILL on June 06, 2014, 20:38
I have an area of the allotment that has been a bit neglected. Today I set about weeding the area, last year I grew first early potatoes in there. But obviously some got left behind which have now grown into new plants. I know the advice is to buy seed potatoes to minimise disease. But as I was pulling them up I noticed new potatoes that looked very healthy. Is this just propaganda from seed suppliers so we buy their products.  I  have bought seed potatoes this year and using potato sacks to try and prevent the beds having the same problem next year. But I was just wondering whether I am throwing away perfectly good new potatoes in the meantime.

You can eat them, if they are sound - but volunteers do risk carrying blight, and other diseases, from one year to the next...... so get them up asap
