Malt or Distilled Vinegar - Can I interchange on Chutney?
« on: September 17, 2009, 11:53 »
Hi all
Hope fully a quick question -I'm about to try and make Val's Apple Chutney and it says use the White Distilled Vinegar - I have loads of Malt Vinegar left over - can I safely swap it?  How will it alter chutney?

Thanks
Regards

your malt vinegar is brown?  I would think it would make the chutney darker in colour and would add a different flavour ...  distilled vinegar tastes sour but doesnt have a flavour in the same way that malt does.

having said which ...  I would think it would be nice, just a bit different!

I interchanged malt for wine vinegar in a recipe... Not the best exchange I did. It was only about 50% of each rather than 100% of wine, but the malt vinegar taste threatened to overpower everything else. I've never used distilled vinegar, though, so don't know if its a similar taste to malt.

I'd tread carefully and watch the replies here...

Yes my Malt Vinegar is Brown - the stuff I would normally put on my chips.

Thats a lot of flavour for apple.

Brillant for pickled onions ...  and pickled eggs.  They get a brown outside but my OH says malt vinegar makes them better for going with a pint!  Sophisticated tastes .... :D
