Epsom salts for fruit and veg
« on: May 25, 2013, 12:42 »
I keep coming across people who say I can use it for this and that and online says different advice, so what fruit and veg would benefit and what hates it so don't go near.

I sent hubby for some and he came back with a sack. I am hoping it's good for lots of things

It's source of magnesium, which is a trace element lacking in some soils.

Raspberries and tomatoes seem to be the favourites to show the symptoms, which is usually a yellowing of the leaves between the veins, although it can appear in different ways too (Gurgle pictures of "magnesium deficiency plants.")

It is only a trace element though - a sackful is rather a lot and it certainly isn't a magic potion which should be heaped around the garden on everything!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Shame lol hubby can bath in it. Also read good for lawns, raspberries need some but I was expecting a tiny box full not a sack. Oh well never mind.   read fruit trees may like a weak drink of it too.  I won't sprinkle it on it will be diluted in water for whatever needs.

As you say, you can use it in the bath. Softens the water  ;)

Well with our water we'd need a sack full. Lol raspberries will get a good dose for the next 30 years plus.

Every spring my roses get a good sprinkling around their bases as it really gives them a boost.

I also add epsom salts to my 'magic mix' for planting out veg which contains kelp, bonemeal, lime and several other ingredients. I find once a season is enough for the epsom salts.

If you have the big sack like I do, store it in a wheely bin with a lid or metal trash bin with a lid to keep it dry so it doesn't cake or harden on you. It's easily chipped off in chunks but easier if you offer some protection.

I feed the raspberries with epsom salts every year.
The extra Mg2+ really helps prevent yellowing of the leaves (as aforesaid ;) :D )
