Whats been at my Parsnips
« on: November 30, 2008, 18:46 »
Dug some up at the allotment today and a lot of them are affected to some degree. This is one of the worse affected ones, some are ok bar the top part which can be cut out. Does anyone know what it could be.

Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.

Looks like canker.

Could be one of many causes, amongst which are fresh manure & believe it or not, carrot root fly.

The little larvae make tunnels in the root, thereby letting the canker in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ooooo nasty

Canker I'd say.  Carrot root fly is often the cause.  They knibble the tops and the bacterium gets in

I'd planted Gladiator and Countess, which are meant to be canker resistant (can not remember which row this one was from, Gladiator I think which is meant to be the more resilient of the two).

The carrot root fly’s must be getting there own back after I 'hid' the carrots in barrels (too high for them to reach, worked fantastically).

Is there anything I can do next year to avoid this (didnt have any problems last year at home).

You can cover with a fine fleece like "Enviromesh". I grow mine alongside the carrots inside a polythene fence.

Depends what book you read, but I get away with a 24" barrier as per the RHS...
