I have just bought a house and have been out in the garden. hedge cutting pond emptying etc.

My problem is I have 3 self seeded elders all destroying fence boundaries or just wrong place.

I have cut back to stumps but need advice on killing them off. They need to go as I dont want them regrowing and wrecking new or repaired fence panels.

I also have three hacked backed (not by me ) clumps of privet that need to come out. Is it just a case of digging out these.
NOT ARF !

Organically : Cut them off as flush to ground level as you can.  Fold a black plastic sheet or large bag to give 6 layers or more.  Weight down with bricks on all 4 sides.

You might get a shoot or two from suckers.  Same treatment should sort it permanently.

or you can treat the stump with a root killer. digging them up is difficult as they have long, strong roots.

I think Aidy's method would be a little drastic DD, you may not be able to grow veg there for a few thousand years     I think stump killer would be a much better option

But it would dig the garden, get rid of the bindweed & couch grass, all in one go. :D
