what will you grow this year?
« on: February 16, 2012, 16:43 »
I've been thinking about what to grow this year.

I experimented last year with some corn and butternut squash but a poor August prevented much more than a (delicious) taste from either so this year I'll be doing more of the things we like to eat (rather than things we don't like to eat of course).

garlic
onions
lettuce
spring onions
red onions
carrots
parships
beetroot
cauliflower
brocolli
peas
spinach (chard once the spinach has bolted)
dwarf beans
swede
potatoes

Beyond a bit of pak choi I'm not sure I'll be trying anyhthing new.

How about you?

I can guarantee that I shall grow dandelions and couch grass on the paths.  :D

Otherwise:-

Carrots, parsnips, kohl rabi, swedes, turnips, lettuce, spring onions, radish, beetroot,  peas, broad beans, runner beans, dwarf beans, coriander, rocket, rhubarb chard, courgettes, leeks.

Already planted - garlic and winter onions.

That's in addition to the regular herbs, apples, pears, strawberries and raspberries that are already in place along with flowers under the fruit trees.

What else goes in depends on what is in the seed box and what I can squash in.

That's a heck of a variety of squashes mum.   Of that lot which would you grow if only one?     (I've got some Uchiki saved from last year).      Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I'd have trouble deciding between Thelma Sanders and Uchiki Kuri.

Uchiki maybe a lttle sweeter fleshed, but Thelma sets more reliably in the conditions here and also stores for longer  :)

Only one variety of carrot! That's very restrained of you  :D

I like your squash choice there MOS  :)  I'm adding a new one to my "to grow list" this year - Muscade de Provence.  I love Thelma Sanders, so beautiful yet prolific  :)  I like Crown Prince the best Klefti  :)

I didn't have a good crop of Uchiki Kuri and Crown Prince last year, only one of the latter and two of the former, and none of them very big. But they were really nice :)

The only winter squash I've ever eaten before is butternut, and both of them were way nicer in taste. And even though immature, both stored for really quite a long time too. The Crown Prince smelled exactly like a melon when I cut into it. I'm hoping for a much bigger crop of both this year, and I'm trying Harlequin as well.

I will be growing all the usual vegetables, peas, beans, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, leeks, ect, ect.  Also I like try something different or unusual,  this year it's  Samphire.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I will be having a go at the following: aubergine, asparagus, carrot, parsnip, broad bean, french bean, borlotti bean, strawberry, apples, potatoes, various salad /lettuce leaves, various herbs, beetroot, celery, celeriac, kohlrabi, fennel, cabbages, cauli, PSB, onion, garlic, shallot, leek, kale, swede, sweetcorn, tomatoes, spinach, spinach beet, squash, pumpkin, various fruit bushes inc lots of raspberries, courgettes, cucumber, radish, chillis, sweet peppers, erm i think that's about it. Some of those will only be in a small part of a bed, so a couple of 4ft rows, so I am hopeful i can get them all in. The potatoes are going in plot 2 where the apple trees / chickens are, as I am planning a few long rows of those.

Not sure whether to bother with peas, and will probably give turnips a miss too this year as I don't really like them that much.

Can't wait! Might plant a few chillies this weekend actually.

..and various herbs, the odd broad bean (saved from last season).

//edit: Oh! And carrots, beetroot and possibly radishes dotted between everything else.
