Pot grown v bare root
« on: August 08, 2013, 20:39 »
I wasn't sure whether to add this to my other thread but as it is a different Q I decided to start a new thread. I don't mind if mods think it should be merged though.

Would I be better off buying 3l pot plants now and planting them out or waiting until bare root plants are sent out? I don't mind paying a bit extra for pot plants if it means the plants are likely to be a bit hardier and more likely to fruit next year but if there is likely to be little difference I am happy to wait....

personally I would say use a bare root plant in a properly prepared hole and don't let it fruit in year one  :)
I cook therefore I grow

I seem to have better success with bare rooted plants, but my instinct always says go for potted  thats why i dont call myself a gardener. I do ok making mistakes left right and center.

IMO it wouldn't be easy to establish a potted plant at this time of year.  It'd need a lot of care, including a fleece wrap, if on an exposed site.

You could re-pot them and bring them on in sheltered conditions, before planting out in Autumn.

Bare-root seems the safest, simplest way, without losing much by waiting, and in fact they may well be stronger than potted plants for being left in the ground at this time of year.

How would I not let it fruit? And is there no way of me getting fruit next year? (Even a small small amount...)
