Crown Prince Squash
« on: October 28, 2012, 08:33 »
Hi in 2011 I grew Crown Prince Squash and had a fantastic crop, this years plants crop was ruined by slugs before they could take hold. My other BNS plants which did survive produced a poor crop and I didn't get one squash for storing.

I was told that Crown Prince Squash does well in our cooler climate, so did anyone grow Crown Prince in this years appalling summer and did you get a good crop?

I managed to save 1 plant from the snugs and got one halfsize squash :(
You can see it in my diary, if you really want - but I wouldn't bother  :nowink:

I didn't manage to grow them at all in 2011 when you had a fantastic crop :(, although I've had successful squash crops here in previous years. I'll try them again when we are guaranteed a good summer. :)

I know a friend did well with hers this year, and the local organic farm has had a good year (well the ones they have sent me in my veg box have been good!)- had to resort to having a veg box again as this year has been so bad!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

I had nothing at all from my Crown Prince this year, and I didn't get much from them last year either, just a couple of miniature fruit. Both years I did get a decent crop from Uchiki Kuri, so I suspect they're much more able to handle our lousy summers than Crown Prince. I'm not sure I'm going to do CP again next year, because they do take up quite a bit of space and that's just wasted if they can't crop unless it's a very good summer. I wonder if the organic farm was growing them in tunnels.

I always grow Crown Prince and it's one of my favourites for cooking

I had an average crop, but I did manage to get four good sized one and about six smaller ones.

In good years I've had a dozen large fruits so all in all I'd say it was a below average year. Squashes will always do well with a longer, sunnier growing season but if you grow a good cross section of varieties you stand more chance of getting a better harvest. My Muscades have done brilliantly as have the New England Pies, Winter Festivals and Baby Bears.  The large jam pumpkins have done ok too

Yes. This was one of the few crops to actualy did anything this year. I only planted a couple of plants but got 5 decent ones off, the first will be used next week for pie.

Next year I will put around six plants in along with other pumpkins and squash. Given up on corn now.

We got a small one in the normal veg box, and then they have been doing special 'squash boxes' which provided us with a couple of larger ones.
(not the same as GYO, but now have a squash mountain to munch through!)

They are also selling them by the Kg, as they got a supply offered to them that were 'BIG'
so you can buy a slice!  :D

I managed to get 2  from 1 plant. Other plants were eaten by slugs.  I've not grown this variety before but will give them a go next year and hope for better weather.

You'd have to support each fruit, if you grew them on a frame  :(

Just let them romp. They can grow on rough uncultivated ground as long as they have a good forkful or two of muck dug in first. They are heavy feeders. Sunshine is preferable for a good crop but we have to take our chances, and accept that some years our crop will be better than others

If you grow a range of squashes and pumpkins you will find that you will get a decent haul
