and assuming you have permission to collect it - which is a whole other topic!

My understanding was that anything washed up on a beach and not attached to rocks is deemed 'dead' and fair game to collect

Don't know how that happened - hadn't even looked at that thread!

Should be OK now.

Interesting, I know it's legal where I live, as the beaches are owned by the parish, and presumed this was the case nationwide

Of course, but no reason why the two varieties wouldn't taste identical if grown the same way

My plot does not face south, slope steeply down to the sea of get a covering of seaweed twice yearly.

Those conditions are why Jersey Royals have a unique flavour imho  :D

I grow Vales Emerald for a salad potato --it is an early variety that is readily available this year, and as well as a decent taste it is a nice round potato that looks good on the plate  ;)

Popped into one of our local garden centres today and they have just got them in so try next weekend. As for which I'd re commend , it would definitely be Charlotte (a second early) fab salad potato. I think the traditional planting for spuds is Good Friday! Although you can of course plant before that  ::) hope you enjoy your harvest :)

The Good Friday thing is a load of rubbish. Even my grandfather said so. How can a "date" that varies by about four weeks be a good guide to planting?

A fixed date, like St. Patrick's day is a better guide, even then the greatest influence is the current weather pattern you're experiencing.
