You should be able to get Charlottes (probably the most widely grown salad variety) everywhere.

I plant all my potatoes in the second half of March, but if you're further North, then perhaps April would be better.

If you could click your user name and put a location in your profile it would really help when you ask these kinds of questions  :)

Garden centres may not stack them under the heading of "Salad". Look under "Second Early".
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I grew International Kidney last year which are Jersey Royals in all but name. Very nice potato, I planted somewhere near the end of March from memory

Think I'm going to try Belle de Fontenay this year, have heard that they are delicious

Look online for a greater choice of varieties

There's actually quite a few on the forum that would not agree that it approaches the flavour of Jersey Royals.

Especially the Jersey Royals of years ago!

This explains why we can't compete - even on Jersey the modern way of growing doesn't produce the same flavour

I was led to believe that they are genetically identical potatoes but that Jersey Royal must be grown in Jersey hence the name change

They may be genetically, but the growing conditions of any veg have a vast influence on its flavour.

As for International Kidney, I grew them.

Once!

Of course, but no reason why the two varieties wouldn't taste identical if grown the same way

I'm including the soil under the heading "conditions". You'll only get Jersey soil and everything that's been tipped onto it for centuries, in Jersey!

IF you can supply the exact conditions as given in my link - then in theory they should taste the same.
It seems that even the farmers on Jersey can't/don't any more, so they don't taste the same when you buy them - let alone when we grow them, which is sad  :(

That's why I don't grow them, now - preferring Lady Christl, which are lovely new potatoes.

Here's a list of salad varieties that you may find in your local garden centre

oops a bit of a snap - sorry DD

So to go back to the original point of my answer - International Kidney will taste the same as Jersey Royals if you grow them both at home alan/gill

Seaweed is a much under-used natural fertilizer in my opinion and completely free if you live near the coast

Like DD, I grew International Kidney spuds just the once!

Nothing like the flavour of Jersey Royals, but then again the "real thing" is a bit hit and miss these days IMHO (probably because the use of seaweed is largely discontinued there now.)

Shame that Sheffield is about as far from the sea as you can get in this country!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
