Slug and snail experiment
« on: January 16, 2017, 08:05 »
I made use of the bad weather last week and stripped a load of old cable back to the copper wire. Saturday I stapled it on the edging boards around one of my four beds. The plan is that once any that hatch on the plot are "removed" the copper wire will prevent any emigrating from the surrounding plots. With a bit of luck I have enough cable left to do one of the other beds as well.
I will up date you later in the year whether my mini "Brexit" works or not. I will be keeping my eye out for anyone throwing out electric lawn mowers and alike so can do the other 2 beds if successful.

I would do two lines around, joining them and add a small 9v sqaure battery to it worked for me.
Dear God, Please can you stop the wind and rain and bring on the nice weather. Amen

If you join them, you'll just short the battery out and flatten it.

Yes, small black snails live in the soil, so your system won't stop them coming up to the surface
You'll stop snails, though if you can get it to work.

I think the copper wire + battery would work really well in a greenhouse especially on racking (just thinking about all those tender seedlings in spring, and along comes a snail or slug ....)  I like it  :D

I'd be interested to see the result, too. I understood 90% of slugs are underground. I favour the 'search&destroy' method for certainty.
Grow lights for early germination;
Blow away on NE facing terrace for hardening off;
Small potager 90sq.m at 300metres
No-dig method, intensive planting and incorporating permaculture principles.

Last year I tried two battery oppereted slug fryers.
A standard set up with two bands of wire on the underside of a slab of plywood. One connected to a live terminal the other to the earth of a n electric scooter battery.
This certainly stopped the slimy little sods from scoffing my goodies.
The second one involved me taking one of those battery fly swats apart and taking the componants to a certain deamon with a soldering iron that I know.
He beefed up the componants to run on 12v and I connected this to a copy of the original barrier.
The results were the same as far as deterrant was involved with the added bonus of being able to hear a very sattisfying BANG when sluggy made the connection between the wires.
May the fork be with you

I wonder, if a slug had a heart attack after already touching the first wire with just enough momentum to reach the second wire, might the resultant shock not act as some sort of basic defibrillator and drag it back from the brink enabling it to enjoy a second chance at life....?

I'll get me coat.

How about doing a hunt with a wet beach spade ( reduces the stickyness ) and flicking them in the direction of a hard surface used by metal objects with wheels at each corner.    A few years ago a neighbour was puzzled when some appeared over night on the roof of their car,  absolutely no idea how they got there!!  :tongue2: :tongue2:
we also rescue rabbits and guinea pigs, grow own veg
