Quarantine for bought in hatching eggs
« on: June 10, 2010, 06:28 »
Just been reading Casey's sticky on quarantine ans was wondering about eggs.

I have 2 lots of bought in eggs hatching at the moment.  I was wondering what disease or illnes can be transmitted via the eggs.

Both places I bought from are pretty reliable small breeders but you never know I guess.

I think it is mycoplasmosis which can be transmitted from mum to egg, which is why people are advised never to breed from hans who have previously had mycoplasma (and once a hen has had mycoplasma they remain carriers for life, which is why some people make the decision to cull the birds, even if they recover).

Then there is salmonella, but I think that is much less of an issue.

I have eggs in the incy form three sources and they are all mixed up.

I don't think you are going to get egg to egg transmission, unless you have an egg explode due to bacterial contamination (from dirty eggs).

Thanks Casey.

I was advised not to wash the eggs if they were clean but the more I read the more I wish I had disinfected them first.  Ah well - a bit late now - day 10.

I am now the proud owner of 3 Incy's so I have one for hatching. :D

also depending on the breeder if their hens have vent gleet then this could pose a threat to the eggs unless washed in disinfectant.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I don't use an incubator and only use clean eggs mostly from my own hens (although I do have eight bought in from a friend clean guinea fowl eggs under two broodies - three more weeks to go).

If the eggs are clean I wouldn't want to get them wet as it destroys the protective bloom.

If you need to clean the eggs, you can very lightly sandpaper off the dirt.

If you have to wash the eggs you need to do it in lukewarm water, and Milton sterilising fluid (of supermarket equivalent) is OK to use (no need to buy expensive egg sterilizing fluid).
