Are you closing up overnight?
« on: May 27, 2012, 13:07 »
Tunnels, I mean. My tunnel faces east and catches all the early morning sun, and by the time I get there to open it up, it's already extremely hot inside right now. If I shut the door but leave all the side vents open, do you think any of the tender stuff will get upset about the swing in temp?

My tunnel and greenhouse have not been closed since this hot weather begun. I have recorded 45 degrees in the greenhouse and this morning at 9am the tunnel was 35 degrees.

Open 24/7 here -  I even removed a small pane of glass to help with ventilation in the greenhouse

Tunnels, I mean.

Closed at night. It doesn't get the sun very first thing and both doors are fabric allowing air movement. We wouldn't want to make it even easier for the mice, now would we?  ::)

Door open in the morning, closed at night - the autovent does its own thing!

Not seen more than 32C during the recent warm spell which is hopefully OK (I think the breezes have probably helped keep the air moving.)

I like the idea of a fabric door. But wot if the nighttime temp dips ...... Do you put the glass back?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

No, its a polytunnel. There is the option to screw clear plastic sheeting on to the door frames for cooler weather. Its just windbreak fabric. :)

Thanks. I've been getting temps well into the 40s in my tunnel every day since this hot spell began. Even with everything wide open all day, I can't get it down to a sensible level. Maybe if I leave everything open overnight it won't build up so much when the morning sun hits it. The peppers are loving it though, I've already got baby fruit on my chillis and sweet peppers, and all are new sowings this year.

I'm still closing up (my greenhouse) early evening to keep the heat in overnight.
Everything seems to be thriving.
Open up every morning.
My greenhouse is in my backgarden though so easy access. If it was on the allotment I would probably leave the door half open.

I think everyone needs to close up, at least overnight - as the next few days are forecast to be cold  :(

Blimey, I thought we were hard done by when they said it might go as low as 7 or 8 degrees overnight for us :)
