I have some beautiful bearded irises growing against my shed. 2 months ago I went round and found about 1/3 of the roots had been dug up and removed.
1st I thought someone (another allotmenteer/ inhabitant of one the adjoining houses) had stolen them to replant in their garden.
But then I wondered if animals would go for irises?
Anyone experienced this/ have any idea what might have happened?

Oh I hope they have not been nicked by a human
But rabbit and mice will eat them and drag them away for their young.  Possibly, the cause can be that they have been getting very wet in the recent weather, this will rot them out, and you will likely find no trace, they just disintegrate.  Have you had a surfeit of rain at that spot or perhaps an overflowing water butt or pipe.  regards, Mrs Bouquet

Thanks for your reply Mrs Bouquet (shouldn't that be spelt bucket??!).
The roots were dug out and all removed, there was a depression in the soil where they'd been dug out.
I'm in London, no rabbits on the plot but certainly there are mice and foxes.
It's an enduring mystery!

Sounds like a 2 legged digger. Put up a sign saying that you were growing them & to keep their mitts off

I must admit I think so too snowdrops. It's the way it was done quite neatly , no sign of fur, pawprints etc.
