'Freezing Red Wine'
« on: April 27, 2011, 21:50 »
Has anyone done it with any success? Jude. (Would only be used for cooking!)

alcohol doesnt freeze , so I'm not sure if the wine would solidify succesfully...I think it would stay slushy :unsure:

I've done it before, don't remember any spillage problems, and I also don't recall it not going solid (although I may just have been very unobservant when I took it from the freezer!).

Put it in a leakproof plastic container with some expansion room in it (i.e. don't fill it right to the top) and it should be fine.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I cannot think of a better waste of time (and electricity) just to keep the wine frozen.

  Why are you attempting to do this?   The only reason I can think of is that you wish to remove the alcohol and that you can do while you de-glaze the pan.    ::)    Cheers,   Tony.

the reason I freeze wine is that I use it in cooking sometimes and it saves the bottle going off after it has been opened (I don't drink alcohol so I wouldn't consume it that way). I find it does freeze but stay quite sticky  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

There is a product available in canister form that puts a layer of nitrogen on top of the part wine and 'evicting' the oxygen.   :ohmy:   Cheers,   Tony

My friend bought the wine for Easter lunch. I don't drink and my husband's not keen on wine so rather than let it sit on the side til it's way past it's best and then throw it down the sink, I thought I'd ask the question! Now if she'd bought chocolate...........!  :)

I don't know if wine will freeze because many of the homeless people like to drink wine so they won't freeze at nights (seriously).  Street drunks here are referred to as winos as they drink it, again, to keep from freezing at nights. Hard liquor might freeze which is one reason why they won't drink it.

the more alcohol there is in a drink the less it will freeze.

Pure alcohol freezes at minus 114C  :ohmy:

A friend tried this recently (she's a scientist and always experimenting on her friends  ::)).  Her theory was that the alcohol in the wine could be seperated out by freezing.  So she put the wine in a container, part-froze it and poured off the part that hadn't frozen yet.  Sure enough the un-frozen part was more like a 'fortified' wine and appeared to contain much more alcohol than the original wine.

This was attested to by those of our friends who tried it and ended up much more sozzled than they had intended.  :lol:

P.S. My scientist friend is a non-drinker.  ::)

P.P.S. We keep the vodka and gin permanently in the freezer.  It goes a bit syrupy but never freezes.  Stays perfectly chilled for refreshing summer cocktails.
