I don't know what to do - gammon?
« on: December 24, 2018, 09:23 »
I bought an unsmoked gammon joint in November and put it in the freezer. I defrosted it in my cold kitchen overnight but it had a weird smell when I opened the plastic to soak it, this morning.
Now I can't decide whether to carry on with soak and cook - or throw it away?
What would you do?

You do get off smells sometimes when you open meat that has been shrink wrapped.  Its to do with the packing process and our stuff at work often has a mention of it on the label (particularly the frozen stuff) . The smell should go very quickly if it is that.

Soak it and sniff again.  If it smells good, its fine  :)

Just sniffed it again after an hour's soak and it's now in the bin. Still smells wrong and I'm not risking bad tums all round at Christmas
I hope the Co op has some left  ::)

sorry you have had to binned it.  Next time, rinse it off in  solution of vinegar, then cook, and see what it tastes like.

Common sense is the best guide though, so if you were not comfortable, you probably made the best decision.
Hope you get another piece.  regards,    Mrs Bouquet

I did get a replacement Mrs B and no funny smell when I unwrapped it.

It's bubbling away in cola in the slow-cooker right now :)
