- whether to buy a pair of anvil secateurs as the spent raspberry canes are largely brown and starting to dry out, or sharpen up my bypass secateurs?

Almost any secateurs will do that job - the canes are almost dead so you don't need a surgically clean cut.

As to whether yours are worth sharpening, if they are a quality make yes, if not, probably not.   ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

As above , invest in a cheap rotary tool (dremmel type) and sharpening is a 2 minute job !

On some of my old canes I have to use my big loppers(think tree pruning) as my hands are just not strong enough to get the secateurs to work on the larger canes, but on the rest the secateurs are fine. I actually have 2pairs of ratchet secateurs at home,must remember to take 1pair to the plot :)
