This spring I bought a bargain load of 8' bamboo canes for my climbing beans (French and runner). Did a grand job on the new inverted - V climbing frame that the OH built. My dilemma now is where to store them over winter.
They are too tall for the shed and if I leave them out they will rot won't they?

I've seen imaginative use of down pipe to store the canes in with the pipe attached horizontally to a shed.
What other ways could I store them until I need them again next year? I've got approx. 50 canes.

They will usually fit in a small shed if you store them at an angle, which does at least keep them dry. I don't have any bamboo canes at all. I use only hazel, pruned from the hazel tree on my plot. I don't do anything to protect them, just store them in a pile in the trees at the edge. When I need more I chop the tree again! But they seem to last for ever. I simply move wigwams to their new destination as I take them down, and leave them out all winter! I hope my pile of hazel trimmings will shelter some wildlife over winter.

on the end of my compost bin I made a seat from pallets, to form one side is a pallett on edge, my canes and stakes get put into the gap between the layers on this.

our compost bins have a rain catching roof over them and the canes are stored on the support beams for that.  Out of the rain and in the wind to keep them dry .....  You are right, they dont fit in the shed, not with all the other stuff that has gone in for the winter.

Mine go diagonally into the mini tunnel on the floor, positioned carefully so that the ends do not rub on the cover of the tunnel. I tie them together with string.

Short ones (4ft & 2ft) stand upright in pots in the shed, and they take up very little room.

Two or three straps of tough webbing material formed into loops. Attach to the back of the shed, one loop at either end.  Then simply slide your canes into the loops/slings.  It's worth noting that storing at a slight angle will let the worst of the water run off.

So leaving them out to the elements won't make them rot?

They'll be OK as long as they have a chance to dry out between wettings - it's being permanently wet and with no air circulation which rots them.

Having said that, mine are all in the shed, even though they don't fit!

All in the shed - long ones are in at an angle, short ones are tied in a bundle and hung horizontally under a shelf on guttering clips (as per archibtm's diary posts).

Will do a bit of trigonometry to see if I can get them in the shed at angle

I lob 'em on the shed roof.  Alright, they get wet, but the occasional sun dries them.  I normally ditch them about three to four years.
