Title: Plastic greenhouse
Post by: RJR_38 on March 16, 2014, 09:03
I've got one of those large plastic greenhouses (not the ones you can walk in, the next size down) and am trying to work out the best way to attach it on my balcony. It is metal flooring but I am putting it against railings and next to a drain pipe so I have plenty of things to attach it to. Of course the difficulty is how to attach something to the greenhouse itself. Last  year I weighted it down on the bottom shelf (waste of a shelf) and made small holes in the plastic so I could wrap cable ties round. This was fine until a bit of strong wind meant that the plastic ripped. I have a new cover but am wondering how others attach theirs - surely making holes in the plastic isn't the answer.?

You could try bungee straps, making holes in the plastic is not a good idea as it will rip in high winds.

Yes, I found that out last year! Honestly, all the manufacturers would have to do is put a few holes in with metal rings! I hadn't thought of bungee straps... Will have to see if I can get hold of some. I assume you 'wrap' them round the whole green house?

I cut a piece of chipboard slightly bigger than the area of the base ,I then put copper piping saddles around
the bottom tubes and screwed to the chipboard base .It didn't move , you could also weigh down the chipboard .

I've done the bungee cords for now which actually feels quite solid. I will also bear in mind the chipboard option if it starts to look wobbly. Thanks for the tips!

You might be better off with plywood or similar as chip board will swell when wet ect  ???

Yes,I thought that. I would probably end up using marine ply. At the moment bungee cord is working well!
