Title: New chooks.
Post by: colinv622 on May 19, 2014, 08:07
We picked up our hens on Saturday and they've settled really well, even our cats prowling and paying them a visit hasn't spooked them, the cats seem more weary of them.  Going to make a few mods to my hutch conversion for them but they've been using all of it even the upper level.

One of them was on top of the coop tonight! Need to work something out to stop that.

post a piccy of the house/run set up.
Mine is enclosed and now lower which will stop roosting on top, but when the roof was higher we attached chicken wire from the top of the house to the roof of the run.

could you raise the feeder and water off the ground as it will help them to eat easier

Yep raising the feeder and water is on my list of extra jobs, I've put netting across to the top more to keep other birds out but it's worked a treat in keeping them down without clipping their wings.  Is it common practice to put food and water in with them of a night?

I have posted a piccy of the new set up I've done

I have 2 feeders and 2 waters hanging from the roof as I have 4 hens, the biggest being the most dominant. They are in the run area, hanging keeps it from being knocked over and pooped in!!
don't put it in the house as not needed at night and the water can create mould inside.
If mainly in the run, hang a cabbage (mine prefer spring rather than savoy). foxes aren't too keen on netting either.
your birds will get heavier and will try to fly less.

Are you sure that's the right piccie, Colin?  I can only see 3 pairs of trainers (albeit against a lovely purple backcloth  )
