Blackcurrant and Redcurrant
« on: October 02, 2013, 15:04 »
Hi all. My neighbour from an adjoining plot found that one of his blackcurrant bushes had spawned a new bush, and asked if I wanted it. Naturally I said yes, so he cut it free and dug it up. A few minutes later he found that the same had happened with a redcurrant bush, so I got that one as well.
Both are about 30 inches or so high, and all I've done for the moment is to plant them, heel them in and give them a good watering. The question is, do you think they'll do anything? He said he'd never tried it, but it's worth a go. If so, is there anything particular I should be doing with them at this stage? Thanks.

Just water if there is a very dry spell and leave them alone till next year when they will leaf up and in a couple of years you will get fruit from them.  They are very easy to propagate.

It is indeed. So far I've been given strawberry plants, the redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes, and a greenhouse! Also, the promise of some raspberry bushes, and a lot of tomatoes from my plot neighbour. What a sociable activity this allotmenteering is.

It is certainly sociable. I find being on the plot a little like stepping back in time. The majority of plot holders are a generous bunch, with time to stop and chat a little. I have met lots of lovely people. It will not be long before you are sharing your bounty with others too and giving away currant bushes!  :)

I think I'll be giving away a large percentage of anything that grows, just to repay everyone for their help and advice. A real milestone will be when someone asks me a question - and I know the answer!
