Title: Summer Raspberries

I got some summer raspberry canes off another plot holder, he dug them up and they had been left with the roots in water for a few days before I planted them.

It has to be said they are looking a bit sorry for themselves, leaves wilting etc

Will they just die back to a bare cane before coming again next year, it dows look like the canes I have got haven't fruited this year so maybe no pruning needed?

No pruning needed if they are canes newly grown this year, and they will lose their leaves soon anyway.

Just keep them well watered and mulched, with a feed next Spring and they will be fine.

They might need supporting once they grow to her full height, or they might blow about in the wind or trail on the ground a bit.

I don't think they will have liked being stood in water for several days :(

I think Raspberries should be cut to ground level after planting, and new canes awaited next season. For Summer fruiting that means you won't get a harvest until year 2, but it helps to build up a strong root structure for subsequent years (personally I would not let Autumn fruiting varieties fruit in the first year either, for the same reason).

I expect they will recover from their soaking, so don't worry.

I just jumped straight in with my Autumn raspberries and they were fine in the first season -- each to their own  ;)

I agree, but I expect that is what has made them look sickly, for the moment

O/P has Summer raspberries though, although I agree you will get a crop from Autumn raspberries in Year 1, and probably most people take it :), I chose not to.
