Pumpkin ale

I have a few pumpkins coming along nicely so I'm wondering if to make a beer out of it.

I read in the Homebrewer's Garden book that the skin is cooked to soften and then you brew with it.
Anyone else ever tried making a pumpkin ale or wine?
