Yucca plant
« on: March 11, 2011, 08:26 »
I have a big yucca in my garden (I know what i would have to do if it was a tree but i dont want to hear it) :( its got to a point where it keeps falling over the roots don't seem to be strong enough to hold it upright it looks like the main leader has rotted off this winter but still looks like its holding its own at the moment.  If it was a tree i would just chop it up but we have had this for years and i don't want to  :(  i got a gas bottle holding it up at the moment will change for a stake and tie if its worth saving its about 7ft tall
Not got much chance tho i don't think.
Thanks
Kris

They're slow growers and if it was mine, I'd try to save it as well by staking it. I'd paint my stake a greenish shade to blend in with the yucca so its less noticeable and careful not to ground the stake too close to the root base.

I'd also check the soil dampness. Yuccas are arid plants and if the  soil is too moist, it could be part of the problem. Hilling up a bit for better runoff might help in the long run.

Hi Trill

Thanks for your advice i will try and bank some soil up around it and see what happen's from there. I will get a stake and tie from work tomorrow.

I cut my yucca down this year as the frost had damaged it and a large part fell off.
It might sprout again from the roots, but I hope it does not!
I ended up with blood running down my face from a tiny puncture wound in my forehead as it got its revenge and attacked me.
They are rather beautiful when in flower, but so vicious.
