Might want to consider some chemical warfare for the bindweed digging it out is great but unless you reach Australia you will find it coming back again. Depending on weather one trick is to get it to grew up a stick then spray the whole weed and wrap in plastic bag so the weed killer gets a chance to be absorbed in kill roots. Other thing for clay is you need to add in as much humus/compost/horse manure etc that you can lay your hands on. Also could look at adding in some sand as well to improve drainage. Key though is to pace yourself concentrate on a few beds and gradually bring it into production.

Have fun HH
Keep digging

Arky, I've had my lottie for a year and the trick with bindweed is:

Wait until it's growing, then nuke it with weedkiller spray that gets into the roots.  It's the only way (for me).

I also found a good way to target the bindweed precisely is to put loads of stakes around the area.  Bindweed likes to climb up them and when it's covered in leaves spray them then.

That way you don't contaminate the soil or plants around them.

I would like to add that this handy hint was given by a forum member, but I can't remember which one, so proper acknowledgement can't be given!
