Hi there, when i was homebrewing i would ask my local pub, they were more than happy for me to collect as many bottles as i could carry as they would have to pay for them to be taken...

I used to crown cap my bottles magners bottles are perfect.

Hope this helps..

beg borrow and steal. I have about 100 and didn't pay for one of them. As Eds says try the local pub or if you have a bottle collection, go out late that night and go bottle hunting :)

Glass recycling bins around supermarkets are a good source for bottles especially full ones as people leave them outside in bags.-------Fred

The homebrew shop in Farnbourough would often resell the old quart screw top bottles (with the screw thread on the inside). They didn't charge that much for them and all the money went to charity. Retiring home-brewers (self included) would give their old bottles back to the shop having brought them second-hand years earlier. Maybe other shops do similar and will keep your name on a list.

These were great for bottle-conditioned beers as there was only one bit of sediment for two pints.

can buy plastic bottles now with screwcaps marketed for bottling homebrewed beer

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Plastic-PET-Bottles-Caps-Homebrew-Beer-Wine-12PK-NEW_W0QQitemZ390069758115QQcmdZViewItemQQptZHome_Brew?hash=item5ad1f828a3

never used them nor did i stock them in my shop but the supplyers i used said they was a fast seller and aimed at the "mail-order" market.

i "did" stock and sell plastic demi-johns and they sold faster than i could get them and where of good quality.

The bin men took about 40 from our house this morning - had me mum and dad up this weekend and chinese beer was a £1 a bottle in Morribuns - rude not too!

Beg, borrow and steal was the best suggestion! Ask on freecycle as well.

the best bottles are Grolsch swing tops, but Grolsch do pay to get them back, so be prepared to offer your local publican a few quid for a crateful, he's not having you on when he says he has to return them.

Do you want glass or Plastic??? both have avantages and disavantages.

Glass, Easy and cheep to get from Pubs etc.  However not all are suitable.  Glass beer bottles these days are quite thin and not upto being capped as second time.

See this link. http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=30996

Plastic: 1Ltr mixer bottles (soda water etc) are great and what I use.  The caps can be re-used time and time again.  Hold more pressure than most glass bottles.  Easy to clean and dont smash.  THe only disadvantage is that they can loose a bit of pressure if left for over 3 months.

I save them from the beers I drink, try to use brown bottles or if not store them somewhere dark. If you need some urgently the try Wilkinsons they sell packs of 6 homebrew bottles for about £3

something I should add if you do re-use "crown capped" commercial bottles of any kind always re-cap them with a lever type capping machine, NEVER use the hammer on type.

The bottle rims are not made to withstand the hammering action and can easily splinter, depositing glass fragments into the beer.

Also, before you go collecting loads of one type of bottle make sure your capper will cap it. The necks on some beer bottles make them very hard or even impossible to cap with a lever capper
