I've always used a small bag of propriety cactus compost from the garden centre as I only have a couple of tiny pots. Though I imagine any compost with a hefty dose on sharp sand and some fine gravel would do the trick...

I agree.  You can get small bags of cactus compost at the garden centres.  The minimum requirement would be decent drainage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

And you could use some folded strips of newspaper wrapped around the actual cactus to move it --- saved jabbing your fingers  :D

Try taking the cactus out of its pot then, if the new pot is bigger, put a bit of new soil in the bottom of the new pot and place the original pot on top of this. Adjust with more soil to ensure both rims are at the same height. Backfill the space between the pots with the new soil and push down to eliminate any air spaces. When nearly full, gently twist the old pot out and insert cactus, then top up soil level to match original level.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

The third best use for my motorcycling gloves.  The first is of course motorcycling, and the second.  .  .  .  getting hot jars out of the oven to fill with jam or jelly.    :D       Cheers,     Tony.
