Reason for potting on
« on: June 18, 2010, 12:11 »
I had some tiny margeurite plugs delivered a couple of weeks ago as I have probably already told you.  I potted them on to a small 4 inch pot and then a short while after that, all except two, in the new raised flower bed.  The remaining two I potted on to a slightly bigger pot about 6 inches I guess.  The ones in the pot are bigger than the ones in the raised bed, and bushier.

I usually do pot on but don't know the real reason its neccesary.  Is it something to do with root rescrition.

My question is this one of the reasons we pot on.  Do plants grow better if gradually potted on rather than going into a big bed.  Same compost.

Also depends on where the remaining two were left ;)

Few weeks ago we took delivery of some dahlias, god they were in a sorry state, anyway we planted them all out except 3 that had snapped stems which we asked for replacements for.

The replacements came a week later and were only slightly bigger than the originals (at the time the originals arrived ). Instead of planting them out we potted them on and left them on the heated beds in the potting shed.  The difference between them and the ones that were planted out the week before is noticeable a week later ;)

I wonder if the osteospermums would like a bit of warmth might make them grow quicker.  I have enough might try one of them.  Its alright Yabba I won't blame you if it all goes wrong.

Thanks for the link Lesley.
