Cool and dark places such as a garage are good for storing onions. My dad simply places them in the flat banana boxes from the supermarket, though you can also tie them up with string amd hang them or plait them if you're feeling arty. The cultivar is important as some keep a lot longer than others so if you have some short term storers, it makes sense to use them 1st.

Yes I use those stacking cardboard fruit boxes too, with the onions (well dried so there is no moisture in the bottom bit of the stem where it joins the bulb) in a single layer in each box. Ours go in the cool garage and are usually happy there until around late February/early March before they start to shoot, weather permitting of course.

Any that are slightly damaged or spilt a bit at the base go in the veg box in the kitchen cupboard and get used first

I use the stacking plastic mesh trays from the greengrocer, think they have mushrooms in them or soft fruit.

I generally keep them in my shed but that can be hit and miss.
This year I have dried those with the start of fly and it has worked really, made some sausages with them and they were really tasty so I am now drying 50% of them in the dehydrator.

Best bit of kit I have bought the dehydrator  ;)
