Used old house bricks structure
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:36 »
Last year a builder very kindly gave me the bricks he was throwing into a skip. I saved them and made this for growing veg and plants mixed. Hopefully as it's N/W facing the height will help plants get a bit more sun than before. I will gravel the paths in between and also have pots and containers with other plants/veg. The depth of the planting will hopefully help get better kales, chard etc. In summer the sun gets to the far right side by late afternoon. The bricks are not cemented so I have the choice to change later down the line. Also, I will push soil into the cracks and seeds to encourage small plant growth that likes walls.

Hubb, have you filled it yet?

I made something similar if much smaller at my old terraced house and noticed that the weight of the soil slowly pushed out the upper bricks...so if it's not filled yet you might want to push the upper courses inwards an inch or so, so that over time they will move to the vertical rather than past it.

Yes, I have pretty much filled them but of course too cold to plant anything. I will bear that in mind though. Hopefuly the roots on the plants will keep the soil in tact. I might even put black polythene liner between the soil and the bricks.

Thanks for the comments. Just trying to make the best of a small garden.
