Went to allotment earlier and soil not too wet and quite crumbly so planted three rows of red onions.
Will leave garlic til November I think though

Well I am pleased to report I have 2 rows of Senshyu Yellow, 2 rows of Red Electric and 3 rows of White Snowball onions planted.   8)  fingers crossed as this is my 1st attempt at growing anything,  as I have only had my allotment for 6 weeks. Please can someone tell me when I can expect to see some growth from the onions, they have only been in the ground for 7 days.

I am also in the process of clearing another strip in my plot to plant some Garlic  :) ;)

Don't worry if you do not see a lot of growth quickly as they put their energy into getting a good root system before sending up a lot of top growth.

I "lost" my garlic crop cos the goats got in  :(  and ate all the tops off in June/July. Now they have shoots about 10cm high. I've dug a couple up and they are very small. Should I dig them all, or leave and hope for a bumper crop next year?
Best to dig them up and split the cloves and replant the largest in another area, however if you leave them in you will still get some sort of crop but it will not be 'bumper'.

Thanks for that. I'll do it as soon as this storm has passed.

It looks like I worked this out today, I accidenetally dug up some sets I planted a week ago and noticed that it was building up a  marvellous root growth.

I planted my onions garlic 3 weeks ago and they are just starting to show.

It looks like I am going to have to develop the art of patience too. 3 weeks is a long time

I am very happy to report that my onions are starting to produce stalks, top growth, leaves (not sure what is the correct terminology.)   ???
They are very small (half a cm at the most!!)  So this generates another question will they be okay through the frost, the logical part of my brain says yes, because they are over wintering onions.

But will they???

Thanks in advance

Yes they'll be fine. Mine have been covered in snow in the past. Of course there must be a limit to their ability to endure the cold but I think we're unlikely to experience the sort of extreme low temperatures that would see them off (here in the UK that is).

They grow massive roots in their first few weeks and then start to shoot the greenery.  They are made for Autumn planting and will survive in full frost, snow, hail and ice.. and whatever winter brings.. but you might loose a few so dont worry.

Panted 150 onions and 120 garlic this morning. All came from the local market, variety unknown! But I am presuming they are bred to withstand the cold here which can be severe but not for months at a time. Some of that time they will be under feet of snow so protected from freezing to a degree.

In spring i am hoping to put some red onions in as well as some keeping white. The ones I have bought to eat (from the market) have been lovely.

Hopefully I will be able to sell some at the local car boot sale!
