Where am I Allotment has been neglected due to Covid and a leg injury grass has grown around the gooseberry bushes I've cut it down but what's the best way to get rid of it in Tiley

It's almost impossible to get rid of couch grass entirely once it has grown into the roots of a fruit bush.

The only thing I'd suggest is regularly pulling it out.

Will it be okay to put cardboard round the base of the gooseberry bushes and Cover it with a compost will that kill the grass

That would help, but it will most likely grow through in places so you would need to be vigilant & pull it at the first sign of it reoccurring or trowel it out. Overlapping the cardboard so there are no chinks of light is essential & a good thick layer of compost on top maybe 3-4 inches if not more.
