A log wall?
« on: July 09, 2010, 16:15 »
I have an idea of building a log wall/fence. Have people seen these? I have seen them, it looks like logs just sit on top of each other, I do not think this would be secure enough?
My main Qeustion is how could I 'stick' the logs together to make secure? Any ideas please?
I have also seen logs stacked in a wire 'cage' to secure them, I do not like this idea as much.
thank you

If the logs are thick enough you could drill a hole through and then when the logs are piled up put a metal rod through the lot and into the soil...should hold them firm :)

thank you for reply, that means all the logs would have to be in a straight line? Im more after them sitting into eachother effect. Thinking more in the line of an epoxy? I have also seen this kinda done with cob/mud holding them altogether, but dont wana go down this route.
Rod idea- maybe a simple peg holding them?

epoxy wouldnt be strong enough to hold them if a decent gust of wind caught them in winter

mumofstig's suggestion would be the best way to go. just make sure you bang the metal rods (steel re-bar would be best) right in until you cant get it in any further.

They could be layed in brick laying pattern, you can make curves you just have to make sure you drill the holes in the right place for driving the rods through.

Build it like a Dyke , so its in a shape of a letter A , so everything is leaning into its self ,

You could also use large 'U' shaped nails here and there to secure the main/structured logs together

mmm  shaped/fencing nails that is a good one, I did not think of. But would they be strong and long enough? Will do a trial tomorrow!! See how it goes.
Has anyone actually tried this and worked?
