I know I have asked before but finally got my bottom into gear to ring round some tree surgeons for floor covering for my chooks.  What excatly fo I ask for as in what type of wood, shavings, bark, etc etc. thanks

By floor covering do you mean external as fresh wood chippings are not suitable indoors as the mould spores would cause your hens breathing problems as it breaks down.
If you are using outdoors, you need wood chip which is chopped branches rather than greenery (a few leaves won't make much difference), but make absolutely sure that there is no Yew, Laburnum or Deadly/Woody Nightshade in the chippings as these are highly poisonous to hens.

yep just ask for a load of chippings.  The odd bit of green hasnt hurt my hens in two years and there is always some in there unless its the heart on winter!

I pay £20 for a truck load to cover his fuel etc but many tree surgeons just give it away.
