Why are my potatoes so small?
« on: July 20, 2023, 12:46 »
Dear fellow gardeners,

I am still somewhat of a newbie regarding  vegetable growing. This season I planted seed potatoes in bags (king edwards). When one bag’s plant wilted I harvested but despite looking like king edwards they were very small. Why? Not enough fertiliser (I used potato fertiliser)? Not enough water ( I watered them every day). Please advise? I still have Irish Kerr’s pink coming and La ratte. The seed potatoes were bought from certified sellers and were sprouted before going into the ground.

Look forward to your replies.

Not enough water would be my guess, especially, if they were planted in ordinary multipurpose compost, as these dry out very quickly when it is very hot, like it was earlier this year. Bags also loose moisture much quicker than pots,
A soil based compost may have held onto moisture better, as may pots...but that said, June was exceptionally hot
Keep on watering, ideally with a liquid feed occasionally, and fingers crossed your later ones will have a better yield.

King Edwards are a main crop, so probably just too early to harvest. I’m currently harvesting 2nd earlies which develop quicker and they have not yet reached full size. Just checked and harvest time is late August onwards for main crop.

Just a thought , how many seed potatoes did you plant in each bag ? 😊

I planted 4 seed potatoes. I followed the pdf I received through this forum about growing potatoes. But now I give hem a good watering every day and feed the high potash and they look a lot bigger. Plus I leave them till well into august.

Another good thing to do it have a furtle down one side of the pot or row just to see what size they are. You can also eat your harvest!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
